PWA acquiring and the end of SMS: how a shift in bank technology is changing payment acceptance

Kazakhstan's fintech market is going through a quiet but ruthless transformation. Two key trends — the mass retreat of banks from SMS authorisation in favour of in-app Push notifications, and the rapid move to PWA acquiring (Progressive Web Apps) — are rewriting online payment scenarios completely. If your LLP's payment system is stuck in the era of standard SMS codes and traditional redirects, the company is losing customers every day at the checkout stage.

The end of the SMS code era

For a long time the one-time SMS password was the main way to validate a transaction. In today's conditions that tool has become a source of losses for banks and businesses alike.

Mobile operators keep raising their rates for transactional SMS, turning millions of messages into a huge cost line for banks. The channel itself is highly unstable: a delivery delay of just 15–20 seconds cuts the chance of a completed purchase by almost a third. If the buyer is abroad, paying with a foreign card or sitting in an area with a weak signal, the message often never arrives at all. There is one more factor — vulnerability to interception through SIM card duplication.

Instead of SMS, banks are moving payment confirmation into their own mobile apps through Push notifications. The customer gets a pop-up and approves the charge in one tap with Face ID or Touch ID. Confirmation time drops from 40 seconds to a couple of moments, and the risk of data interception falls to zero.

Why fintech needs PWA

Because of the strict policies of Apple and Google, and the risk of being pulled from the stores, banks and acquiring services have moved their digital products to the PWA format. A PWA is a full web site that looks and behaves like a native app, works without an App Store install, supports Push notifications and stays stable even on a weak connection.

A PWA checkout can «call» the bank apps already installed on the customer's phone directly through Deep Links. The customer no longer has to type long card details on third-party sites, because authorisation happens inside a trusted environment. On top of that, PWA solutions cannot be blocked or removed from the app stores, which guarantees a business uninterrupted payment acceptance 24/7.

Where an LLP is losing money right now

When a company runs outdated online acquiring built around the old SMS format, conversion leaks quietly. A buyer paying from abroad simply never receives the SMS and closes the page. Another customer may have Push notifications switched off: the bank sends the confirmation to its app, the user keeps waiting for the familiar code by SMS and abandons the basket. And when the customer is sent to an outdated bank payment page, the phone screen often reloads and wipes the order data.

As a result, businesses write these drop-offs off as «buyer hesitation», while the real cause is a technical conflict between the LLP's payment form and the new standards of the issuing banks.

How to keep payments going through

To avoid losing customers to these technology shifts, your company's payment module has to be able to push verified transactions through the 3DS 2.0 protocols without calling for an SMS or a Push at all. For mobile traffic, integration with Apple Pay and Google Pay is critical, because it removes manual card entry. And when confirmation is required, the system should route the customer into the bank app through a PWA automatically and switch the verification channel flexibly if the first one fails.

The banks' shift from SMS to Push notifications and PWA is not a passing trend but a new standard of security and speed. Moving to modern acquiring protects an LLP's margin, removes the technical barriers at checkout and saves every honest sale.
